On August 24, 2026, Ukraine will mark the 35th anniversary of its declaration of independence. It is one of Ukraine’s most important national holidays, and during the full-scale war, the date has taken on even greater significance as Ukrainians continue to defend their independence and their right to determine their country’s future.

In this guide, Visit Kyiv briefly explains how Ukraine gained independence, why August 24 is such an important date for Ukrainians, and what visitors in Kyiv should know about the holiday in 2026.

When is Ukraine’s Independence Day?

Ukraine’s Independence Day is celebrated every year on August 24. In 2026, it falls on a Monday.

When did Ukraine declare independence?

On August 24, 1991, the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine adopted the Act of Declaration of Independence of Ukraine. A total of 346 members of parliament voted in favor.

One of the authors of the Act was Ukrainian dissident and politician Levko Lukyanenko. According to his recollections, he drafted the document in an ordinary school notebook in about an hour and a half.ї

How did Ukraine become independent?

On July 16, 1990, the Verkhovna Rada of the Ukrainian SSR adopted the Declaration of State Sovereignty. It affirmed Ukraine’s right to make its own decisions on key issues of domestic and foreign policy and declared the supremacy of state authority within its territory.

On August 24, 1991, the Verkhovna Rada proclaimed Ukraine’s independence. On December 1 of the same year, Ukrainians endorsed that decision in a nationwide referendum, with more than 90% of voters supporting independence.

Interesting Fact
After the Declaration of State Sovereignty was adopted, Independence Day was initially observed on July 16. In 1992, the official date of the national holiday was changed to August 24.

Why is Independence Day important to Ukrainians?

For Ukrainians, August 24 symbolizes the right to live in a sovereign country and determine its future independently. The declaration of independence in 1991 formalized Ukraine’s departure from the Soviet Union and paved the way for international recognition and diplomatic relations with other countries.

During the full-scale war, the date has taken on even greater significance. Ukrainians continue to defend their country’s independence, freedom, and right to choose its own path.

Good to know
At the same time, the history of Ukrainian statehood stretches back much further than 1991. It includes Kyivan Rus, the Cossack Hetmanate, and the Ukrainian People’s Republic. For this reason, August 24 is often described not only as the day Ukraine declared independence, but also as the day it restored it.

Will August 24 be a day off in 2026?

In peacetime, Ukraine’s Independence Day is a national holiday and an official day off. While martial law remains in effect, this rule does not apply, so August 24, 2026, does not automatically mean a day off. In 2026, the holiday falls on a Monday.

How is Ukraine’s Independence Day celebrated today?

Since the start of the full-scale invasion, the way Independence Day is marked has changed. Large public gatherings and celebrations are less common, while many events now have a cultural, charitable, or commemorative focus.

On August 24, Ukrainians honor fallen defenders and take part in memorial events and charitable initiatives. Cities may also host exhibitions, guided tours, concerts, markets, and other events dedicated to Ukrainian history and culture.

Traveler’s tip
If you’re in Kyiv on August 24, check the program of cultural and charity events closer to the date. Some of these events raise funds for Ukraine’s Armed Forces or humanitarian initiatives.

What should visitors know about Ukraine’s Independence Day in 2026?

The program of events for August 24 is usually announced closer to the date and may change for security reasons. Before attending an event, check the latest information on the organizer’s official website or social media pages.

If you plan to visit a museum, gallery, or another venue, check its opening hours in advance, as schedules may change for the holiday.

While in Kyiv, follow the basic safety guidelines. If an air raid alert is announced, go to the nearest shelter and stay there until the all-clear.
