How to Get from Poland to Kyiv: By Train, Bus or Car
How to travel from Poland to Kyiv and what to keep in mind when planning your trip and crossing the border.
Ukraine’s airspace remains closed to civilian aviation, so at present you can travel from Poland to Kyiv by land — by train, bus or car.

- Save important information offline. It is best to keep your tickets, accommodation address and necessary documents on your phone and, if possible, as paper copies.

The Most Convenient Routes from Poland to Kyiv
Warsaw — Kyiv
First, check whether there is a direct international train between Warsaw and Kyiv on your chosen date. If tickets are available, this route does not require a transfer.
If there is no direct ticket, check the Warsaw — Chełm route by Polish train, followed by a Ukrainian night train from Chełm to Kyiv. If you buy two separate tickets, leave enough time between the services.
There are also direct buses from Warsaw to Kyiv.
Kraków — Kyiv
One rail option is to take a PKP Intercity train to Przemyśl and then transfer to a Ukrzaliznytsia service to Kyiv.
For an international service, document checks or separate access to the platform may be arranged in advance. Follow the time shown on your ticket and in the carrier’s messages, and arrive at the station with some extra time.
There are also direct buses from Kraków to Kyiv.
Rzeszów — Kyiv
From Rzeszów, you can take a train to Przemyśl and transfer there to a Ukrainian train.
This route is also suitable if you have arrived at Rzeszów–Jasionka Airport: first get to the city or railway station, then continue your journey to Ukraine.
When planning your trip, consider not only train travel times but also the transfer from the airport and the time needed for your connection.
Lublin — Kyiv
From Lublin, you can travel via Chełm: first take a Polish regional or intercity train, then continue by train to Kyiv.
If your journey consists of two tickets, carefully check the time, station and departure date, especially for night services.

Where to Buy Train Tickets
For the Ukrainian part of your journey, check the official Ukrzaliznytsia website or its mobile app.
Several railway operators operate in Poland. You can find the service you need through the state Portal Pasażera, which shows timetables, connections, train numbers and carriers.
For PKP Intercity, tickets are available through e-IC. For regional services, you can check POLREGIO, while KOLEO works as an aggregator for tickets from different operators.
Routes via Przemyśl or Chełm often require two separate tickets: one for the Polish part to the transfer station and one for the Ukrainian part to Kyiv.
Before paying:
- check that your first and last names match your passport;
- check the exact departure station;

What Border Control Is Like on a Train
Depending on the service, border checks may take place on the train, at a border station or partly at the station before boarding.
First, you go through exit control from Poland, followed by entry control into Ukraine. Foreign travellers may be asked about the purpose of their trip, their accommodation address and the length of their stay. Your luggage may also be opened for inspection.

What Happens to the Train During an Air Raid Alert
An air raid alert does not automatically mean that every passenger train will stop. Trains may continue operating, but the situation on the ground can cause delays, route changes or unscheduled stops.

How to Travel from Poland to Kyiv by Bus
Direct buses to Kyiv depart from Warsaw, Kraków, Lublin, Rzeszów and other Polish cities. There are many services, and a transfer is often not required.
However, treat the scheduled arrival time as approximate, as crossing the border can take longer than expected.

In Warsaw, many international services depart from the West Bus Station, although carriers may use other stops as well.
In Kraków, services often depart from the central bus station near Kraków Główny.
In Lublin and Rzeszów, the departure point may be either a bus station or a separate city stop.
In Kyiv, international buses may arrive at the Central Bus Station, Kyiv Bus Station, Vydubychi, Kyiv Central Railway Station or other locations around the city.

What Border Control Is Like on a Bus
The bus joins the queue for passenger vehicles. Border control takes place first on the Polish side and then on the Ukrainian side.

A car is convenient for families, large amounts of luggage or a route that includes several cities.
From Warsaw and Lublin, you can travel towards Volyn; from Kraków and Rzeszów, routes usually go through border crossings near Lviv region.

- Medyka — Shehyni;
- Hrebenne — Rava-Ruska;
- Budomierz — Hrushev;
- Zosin — Ustyluh.

Do not choose a border crossing based only on the shortest route shown on the map: queues can significantly affect the total travel time.
What Documents Do You Need for Your Car?
Prepare:
- a valid driving licence;
- the vehicle registration certificate;
- third-party liability insurance valid in Ukraine;
- the owner’s permission if the car belongs to someone else;
- permission from the rental company if the car is rented.
Not all Polish car rental companies allow their vehicles to be taken to Ukraine, so check this separately.
Before setting off, fill up the car and download offline maps. Do not photograph border crossings, military facilities or checkpoints.
What to Expect at the Polish-Ukrainian Border
Regardless of how you travel, the general process is similar: first you go through Polish exit control when leaving Poland and the Schengen Area, and then Ukrainian entry control when entering Ukraine.
Border guards check your documents and your right to enter the country. Customs officers may inspect your luggage, goods or vehicle.
