Before traveling to Ukraine, it’s a good idea to get medical insurance. If you get sick or injured during your trip, your policy can help cover medical expenses. Just make sure it’s valid in Ukraine and covers your entire stay.

Is travel insurance required to enter Ukraine?
It depends on your visa requirements. If you need a visa to visit Ukraine, you’ll need medical insurance with at least €30,000 in coverage to apply.

If you can enter Ukraine without a visa, check the latest requirements for your nationality in our guide to entering Ukraine.

Do you need travel insurance for Ukraine?

If you need a Ukrainian visa, you must have a medical travel insurance to apply. The policy must provide at least €30,000 in medical coverage and be valid for your entire stay in Ukraine.

If you’re traveling visa-free, check the entry requirements for your passport in our guide to entry requirements. Ukraine’s current entry information also lists medical insurance among the documents travelers should have when crossing the border.

Do you need war-risk insurance?

No. War-risk coverage is not required to enter Ukraine.

A standard travel insurance policy may cover:

  • sudden illness;
  • injuries and accidents;
  • hospitalization;
  • emergency medical care;
  • medical treatment;
  • medical transportation, if included in the policy.

However, many standard travel insurance policies exclude events related to war, armed conflict, missile attacks, or terrorism. You can still use a regular travel insurance policy for a trip to Ukraine. Just keep in mind that certain war-related events may be excluded from your coverage.

What does war-risk coverage include?

A standard travel insurance policy may cover your medical expenses if you get sick or injured during your trip. But if your injury is directly caused by a war-related event, the standard policy may exclude it.

Depending on the policy, war-risk coverage may include:

  • injuries from missile or drone attack debris;
  • injuries caused by falling debris or damaged structures;
  • emergency medical treatment;
  • hospitalization;
  • medical transportation;
  • in some policies, repatriation or a death benefit following a covered event.

Coverage still depends on the policy’s exclusions. War-risk insurance does not mean that every incident related to the war will automatically be covered.

Policies may exclude:

  • participation in combat or military activities;
  • deliberately entering an active combat zone;
  • travel to areas excluded by the policy;
  • injuries resulting from criminal activity or intentionally breaking safety rules.

Some policies also exclude temporarily occupied territories, areas of active fighting, or other locations specifically listed in the policy. Before buying coverage, check whether all the cities and regions you plan to visit are included.

Where can you buy travel insurance for Ukraine?

You can compare travel insurance from international insurance companies on a specialized marketplace.

Enter your destination, travel dates, and personal details to compare available policies, coverage, and prices.

Before you pay, check:

  1. Whether Ukraine is included in the policy’s coverage area.
  2. Whether the policy covers your entire stay.
  3. Which medical expenses are covered.
  4. Which situations are excluded.
  5. Whether there is a deductible and how it works.

If you need insurance for a Ukrainian visa, make sure the specific policy meets the requirements for your visa type.

What do you need to get travel insurance?

You’ll usually need:

  • your full name as shown on your passport;
  • date of birth;
  • citizenship;
  • country of residence;
  • travel dates;
  • destination country.

If you’re using an international insurance marketplace, you’ll enter this information when you get a quote.

Before paying, double-check your name, travel dates, and destination.

Do you need separate insurance if you’re driving to Ukraine?

If you’re driving your own car into Ukraine, you’ll also need international vehicle insurance, commonly known as a Green Card. Visit Kyiv’s article to getting to Kyiv covers the documents you need and what to expect at the border.

What should you do if you need to make a claim?

If you need medical care, check your policy for instructions on how to contact the insurer.

Many insurance companies ask you to contact their assistance service before receiving non-emergency treatment. The number should be listed in your policy documents. The assistance team can tell you where to go and which expenses are covered.

If the situation is life-threatening, don’t wait for your insurance company.

In Ukraine, call 112 for emergency assistance. You can also call:

  • 103 — ambulance;
  • 102 — police;
  • 101 — fire and rescue services.

For medical care in Kyiv, see our guide to healthcare and medical services.

Traveler’s tip
Save your insurance company’s emergency number and your policy number on your phone before you leave home.

Can you buy travel insurance after arriving in Ukraine?

It’s better to buy your policy before your trip, especially if you need it for a visa application. Some insurance companies may also have waiting periods or exclude conditions and events that existed before the policy became active.

Don’t wait until you need medical care to find out how your insurance works.
