Best free attractions in Kyiv

Free historic sites and landmarks

Museum of War and Motherland Monument

The “Motherland Monument” is Europe’s tallest monumental structure at 102 meters, overlooking the right bank of the Dnipro River. This iconic landmark and monument sit within the War Museum’s grounds.

You can view part of the exhibits for free in the open air — including Soviet-era military hardware from World War II and the equipment used in the current conflict. The museum regularly hosts exhibitions covering different periods of Ukraine’s struggle for independence.

Free entry to the museum happens on the last Tuesday of each month, where you can explore the main exhibitions at no cost (except for the helicopter, planes, and observation decks of the Motherland Monument).

Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra and historic cathedrals

The Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra is one of the oldest spiritual and architectural symbols of the city, built in 1051 during Kyivan Rus. The monastery grounds are enormous — dozens of temples, caves with holy relics, museums, and viewpoints offering panoramic views of the Dnipro.

The Lavra traditionally divides into Upper and Lower sections. The Upper Lavra, where the main museums and historic temples are, requires paid entry, but the Lower Lavra hosts regular services open to anyone. On May 18 (International Museum Day), admission to the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra is free.

Throughout Kyiv, you’ll find numerous ancient cathedrals you can stop by while exploring the historic center:

Free parks and outdoor spaces in Kyiv

Natalka Park

Natalka Park is the perfect spot on the Obolon embankment to relax with panoramic views of the Dnipro. It has everything for a pleasant walk: manicured paths, quiet spots to relax, sports courts, and coffee stands and snack kiosks.

Nearby, you’ll see the “Azov Wave” pedestrian bridge connecting the park to Obolon Island, which turns into a popular summer hangout for locals.

Volodymyrska Hill

Volodymyrska Hill is a cozy park in central Kyiv with shaded pathways and viewpoints offering scenic panoramas of Podil, the Dnipro, and the Left Bank.

The park features playgrounds, benches, and gazebos for a quiet break from the city. In warm months, street musicians and singers gather here for informal performances. Nearby stretches the Glass Pedestrian Bridge — one of the best spots to catch sunrise over the Dnipro.

Trukhaniv Island

For nature lovers, Trukhaniv Island is a green oasis in the middle of the Dnipro with wide sandy beaches and views of Kyiv.

In summer, locals come here to swim, sunbathe, and relax by the water. There are also small cafés nearby offering snacks, making the island even more perfect for picnicking. The beaches have cafés where you can grab food or bring your own and set up a picnic.

Free museums in Kyiv

Kyiv has plenty of museums with free entry — from cutting-edge art spaces to intimate galleries:

  • PinchukArtCentre — a six-story contemporary art center with exciting exhibitions
  • Avangarden — a wine bar, restaurant, and art gallery under one roof, where you can view sculptures and paintings for free
  • Museum of Contemporary Art of Ukraine — a private gallery featuring Ukrainian artists across different schools and temporary exhibitions
  • Gapchinska Gallery — an art space showcasing work by renowned Ukrainian artist Yevheniia Gapchinska
  • Apple Museum — a free museum on Khreshchatyk Street with about 100 gadgets tracing the history of Apple products

Many Kyiv museums offer monthly free entry days:

On May 18 (International Museum Day), most of Kyiv’s museums are free to visit.

Free things to do in Kyiv with kids

If you’re looking for budget-friendly options to spend a day with children in Kyiv, the capital offers plenty of family-friendly choices.

Peyzazhnaya Alley

Visit Peyzazhnaya Alley — a park near Andriyivsky Descent with whimsical mosaic sculptures, animal-shaped benches, and playgrounds with views of Podil. During summer, locals often gather here for picnics and outdoor movie screenings.

VDNG

For more active and diverse entertainment, head to VDNG — one of Kyiv’s biggest leisure complexes with attractions, hammocks, bike paths, food courts, and seasonal activities for the whole family. The site regularly hosts fairs and festivals, and in winter operates “Winter Country” — a large amusement park with an ice rink, rides, and winter shows.

Pushcha-Vodytsia

Pushcha-Vodytsia is a forest park that feels far removed from the city despite being within Kyiv. You can walk through the forest, feed squirrels and ducks, ride bikes or paddle boats, explore abandoned dacha houses, sunbathe on beaches, or simply picnic by the lake with a rich history and natural beauty.

Getting here is easy — take tram #12 from Kontraktova Ploshcha metro station. For just 8 UAH, you’ll get about an hour journey through a green forest with fairy-tale scenery. This is one of Kyiv’s best free walking tour options for nature lovers looking to experience a place to have a rest away from the hustle.
