From “Velyka Kyshenia” to specialty coffee: Eric Haar’s Favorite spots in Kyiv
An American entrepreneur and volunteer talks about his favorite landmarks, café, bookshop, and workspaces in Kyiv.
Eric Haar first came to Kyiv in 2020, and in 2023 he decided to move here. Over his years living in the city, he’s put together his own list of places he loves returning to — from historic landmarks to a supermarket, a café, and a coworking space.
Eric shared his Kyiv discoveries with Visit Kyiv — places that have become part of his everyday life in the city.
Eric’s discoveries:
- Golden Gate — a historic landmark in central Kyiv, once the main ceremonial entrance to Kyivan Rus during the reign of Prince Yaroslav the Wise. Today the site houses a museum and an observation platform with a picturesque view of the city. Numerous cafés and cozy spots for walking surround the landmark.
- Andriivskyi Descent — a street in Kyiv connecting Podil with the Old Town. Here you can admire St. Andrew’s Church, browse a market of Ukrainian makers, learn more about the area’s history at the One Street Museum, or try Ukrainian cuisine at the restaurants “Za Dvoma Zaitsiamy” or “Kanapa”.
- St. Sophia’s Cathedral — one of Ukraine’s oldest Christian shrines and a defining Kyiv landmark. Today it houses a museum and exhibition halls that regularly host themed exhibitions. Visitors can also view ancient mosaics and frescoes, stroll the grounds of the “St. Sophia of Kyiv” heritage reserve, and climb the bell tower’s observation deck.
- Velyka Kyshenia — a supermarket on Pecherska Square that Eric often stops by for groceries. Beyond the wide selection, he likes the building’s unusual rounded shape, which locals nickname “the puck.” The largest department store in Kyiv once stood on this spot.
- Mariinsky Park — Eric’s favorite park in Kyiv, located next to the Verkhovna Rada Building. The park features green alleys, playgrounds, the Lovers’ Bridge, the Mariinsky Palace, and other landmarks. Due to martial law, most of the park is currently closed to visitors for safety reasons.
- Idealist Coffee — a third-wave coffee shop chain with its own specialty coffee roasting. Eric often comes here to work over a coffee or meet friends for brunch.
- Sens — a bookshop and cultural space on Khreshchatyk. You can stop by for books, coffee, or one of its events — a book launch, a meeting with an author, or a discussion.
- Creative States — a coworking chain with five locations across Kyiv. It offers open space, fixed desks, private offices, and meeting rooms. Residents also have access to kitchens, coffee areas, and other shared spaces. Current rates and terms can be checked on the website.
