Volodymyrska Street
About Volodymyrska Street
Volodymyrska Street is one of Kyiv’s oldest streets, dating back to the era of Kyivan Rus. It was home to the city’s most important administrative buildings and princely residences, and served as the main route between the Golden Gate and St Sophia’s Cathedral.
After Kyiv was destroyed by the Mongols in 1240, the street fell into decline. It was rebuilt in the 17th and 18th centuries and gradually regained its role as a major city artery. Today, Volodymyrska stretches for nearly three kilometres and passes many of Kyiv’s key landmarks.
Along the street you’ll find the National Museum of the History of Ukraine, the National Opera of Ukraine, the Syrotkin House, the National Academy of Sciences, and the iconic Red Building of Taras Shevchenko National University, where the poet himself once taught.
Volodymyrska is lively, with plenty of cafés, pastry shops and restaurants — an easy place to stop for a coffee or a meal while exploring the city.
