From Ukrainian Theatre to Crimean Tatar Cuisine: An American Teacher’s Favourite Places in Kyiv

Jake McGrew is an American teacher who first came to Ukraine more than ten years ago and has dreamed of returning ever since. Today, he has been living in Kyiv for more than two years, teaches mathematics and music at Kyiv International School, and continues to discover new sides of the city.

Ivan Franko National Academic Drama Theatre

The Ivan Franko National Academic Drama Theatre is one of Ukraine’s leading theatres, where classic Ukrainian and international productions are reimagined through contemporary directing. For anyone visiting the theatre for the first time, Jake recommends The Witch of Konotop (Konotopska Vidma), one of Kyiv’s most acclaimed productions of recent years.

Podil

Podil is one of Kyiv’s oldest neighbourhoods, where historic architecture, cosy cafés, and independent local businesses create a unique atmosphere. For Jake, it is much more than a place for a walk. It is where he returns to reconnect with the city — meeting friends, enjoying a coffee in a quiet courtyard, or simply spending a few hours watching everyday life unfold.

Bookstore Ye

Bookstore Ye is a Ukrainian bookstore chain offering contemporary Ukrainian literature, international bestsellers, non-fiction, children’s books, and classics. Some of its locations also have small coffee corners, where Jake enjoys spending time with a good book.

Seliam

Seliam is a Crimean Tatar restaurant that introduces visitors to the culinary traditions of Crimea. The menu features yantyks, lagman, manti, and other traditional dishes. Jake often comes here with friends to enjoy the warm atmosphere and discover authentic Crimean Tatar cuisine.
