Hotels with shelters in Kyiv for a safe stay
11 hotels to consider, what we know about their shelters, and what to check before booking.
Choosing a hotel in Kyiv isn’t just about location, price, or having a comfortable room. With air raid alerts still part of daily life in Ukraine, it’s important to know where you can take shelter before you check in.
We’ve selected 11 hotels across Kyiv with information about shelter availability. Some hotels share details about their facilities, while others provide very little. And not every space described as a shelter offers the same level of protection. It could be a designated protective facility or a basement adapted for use during air raids.
Here’s what to know about each hotel, how to check its shelter arrangements, and what to do if an air raid alert sounds during your stay.
No shelter can guarantee complete protection from missile or drone attacks. Always contact the hotel directly to confirm the shelter’s type, condition, and accessibility before booking.
Kyiv hotels with shelters: at a glance
Our selection covers central Kyiv, Podil, the area around the main railway station, and the Holosiivskyi district. Information about shelter facilities varies, so treat this list as a starting point rather than a guarantee of safety.

How to check a hotel’s bomb shelter before booking
A listing that says “shelter available” doesn’t tell you everything you need to know. The shelter might be inside the hotel, in a separate building, or in a basement adapted for use during air raid alerts.
Before booking, contact the hotel directly and ask:
- What type of shelter is available? Is it an officially designated shelter or a basement used during alerts?
- Where is it? Can you reach it without going outside?
- Is it accessible 24/7? Can guests use it during nighttime alerts?
- Is there enough space? Can it accommodate both guests and staff?
- How is it equipped? Ask about seating, ventilation, lighting, drinking water, toilets, and mobile reception.
- Can the hotel send recent photos? These can help you understand what to expect.
It’s also worth taking a few minutes to read reviews from recent guests. Search for terms such as “bomb shelter,” “air raid,” “basement,” and “shelter access.” Reviews from travelers who have actually used the shelter during an alert are especially helpful.
If you’re traveling with children, older relatives, pets, or someone with limited mobility, ask about any specific access needs before confirming your stay.
What makes a hotel shelter suitable?
Not every underground room offers the same level of protection. A basement, underground car park, or conference room below street level isn’t automatically an officially designated shelter.
Ukraine has different categories of protective facilities, including civil defense shelters, radiation shelters, and basic shelters. Their protective capabilities and requirements vary.
There are three things worth checking:
- Shelter type and condition. Ask whether the space is officially designated for shelter use and what protection it is designed to provide.
- Access. Make sure you know how to reach it. Being able to get there without going outside is particularly helpful during an alert.
- Facilities. Look for ventilation, lighting, drinking water, toilets, seating, and enough space for everyone staying at the hotel.
Wi-Fi, blankets, and backup electricity can make a long alert more comfortable. But these amenities don’t tell you how much physical protection a shelter provides.
Can you stay near a metro station instead?
If a hotel doesn’t have its own shelter, another option is to choose accommodation near a designated public shelter.
Several underground metro stations in Kyiv are used as shelters during air raid alerts, including Universytet, Zoloti Vorota, Teatralna, Olimpiiska, and Palats Sportu.
However, not every metro station is underground, and being close to a station doesn’t automatically mean you’ll have suitable shelter nearby.
Before booking, check whether the nearest station is underground, how long it takes to reach on foot, whether its shelter entrance is accessible at night, and whether there’s a closer public shelter.
For an overnight stay, a hotel with an accessible shelter inside the building may be more practical than one that requires you to go outdoors during an alert.
You can use our Kyiv metro map to check station locations and our Kyiv shelter map to find nearby shelters.
What to do during an air raid alert at your hotel
When you check in, ask the staff to show you where the shelter is and how to get there. Knowing the route in advance is particularly helpful if an alert happens in the middle of the night.
If you hear a siren or receive an air raid alert notification:
- Go to the designated shelter immediately. Don’t wait until you hear explosions.
- Use the stairs, not the elevator. Follow the hotel’s instructions.
- Take essentials if they’re close at hand. Your phone, documents, and medication are useful, but don’t delay leaving your room to pack.
- Stay in the shelter until the official all-clear.
- Follow emergency service instructions if the situation changes.
If an alert starts while you’re out exploring the city, don’t try to return to your hotel. Head to the nearest accessible shelter instead.

What else should you check before booking?
Shelter access matters, but there are a few other things that can make your stay easier.
Backup electricity. Ask whether the hotel has a generator and what it powers. Some properties can keep essential lighting and internet running during outages, while others may have more limited backup systems.
24-hour reception. Check whether staff are available overnight and who can help guests during an emergency. If you’re arriving late, read up on Kyiv’s curfew rules.
Room location. If stairs are difficult for you, ask for a room with easier access to the shelter. Remember that elevators may not be available during an alert.
Prices and booking terms. Compare prices for your travel dates, check room availability, and read the cancellation policy. Flexible booking can be useful when international travel connections are involved.
Useful apps. Install an air raid alert app before arriving in Kyiv. Our guide to useful apps for visitors covers other tools that can help you get around the city.
FAQ
No. Some have their own shelters, while others use adapted underground spaces or direct guests to nearby public shelters. Always confirm what type of facility is available and how to access it before booking.
You should go to the designated shelter rather than remain in your room. Even a room on a lower floor isn’t a substitute for a suitable protective facility.
It depends on the facilities. Some shelters have chairs, blankets, and drinking water but no beds or designated sleeping areas. If nighttime alerts are a concern, ask the hotel what to expect.
Contact hotel staff immediately. If access cannot be restored, use the nearest accessible shelter if you can reach it without exposing yourself to additional danger. Call 112 if there’s an immediate emergency.
Start with hotels that provide clear information about their shelters, then contact them to confirm the details. When comparing hotels in Kyiv with bomb shelter facilities, check the shelter type, access arrangements, and recent guest reviews rather than relying on a listing alone.
You may also see search results for “kyiv hotels with bomb shelter” or “kyiv hotels with bomb shelters.” These can help you find more options, but always verify the information directly before booking.
