Chili con Carne and Contemporary Art Exhibitions: A German Volunteer Shares His Favorite Spots in Kyiv
Favorite places in Kyiv through the eyes of a volunteer from Germany
Konrad Walter is a German volunteer who comes to Kyiv several times a year to help Ukrainians build FPV drones. For him, Kyiv is more than just a city — it is a source of inspiration and a second home he always returns to. Over the years, he has visited the capital more than 20 times and discovered favorite places that capture the true atmosphere of Kyiv.
In an interview for VisitKyiv.com, Konrad spoke about his first encounter with Kyiv and his volunteer journey. The team also gathered Konrad’s favorite spots in the city — places he visits on every trip.
Konrad’s picks:
- São Miguel — a popular city bar near St. Michael’s Cathedral, known for its Brazilian snacks and unique cocktails. Locals and foreigners alike come here for a beer, hearty chili con carne, and fragrant pizza.
- The Naked Room — a contemporary art gallery on Reitarska Street that hosts exhibitions, discussions, lectures, and film screenings. There is also a bar on site where you can enjoy specialty coffee or a glass of wine, along with a fresh croissant.
- Kharms — a cozy café-bookstore tucked away in a quiet courtyard near Zoloti Vorota. It’s a great place to eat well and take a break from the city bustle with an interesting book. The venue often hosts events and poetry evenings and also has a small souvenir shop. We recommend trying the cherry pie with ice cream and salted caramel — a favorite dessert among visitors.
