About Kyiv Funicular

The Kyiv Funicular is one of the city’s icons and a unique mode of transport connecting Podil — the historic riverside neighbourhood — with the Upper Town. It has been running since 1905 and carries around three million passengers every year.

Before it opened, locals had to climb a steep hill by stairs, so the funicular quickly became a real lifesaver for residents and visitors. Remarkably, it kept operating even during the Second World War because it required very little electricity.

Today, a funicular ride is a quick and scenic way to see some of Kyiv’s key spots. At the top you’ll find St Michael’s Golden-Domed Monastery and Volodymyrska Hill. At the bottom you’ll arrive at Kontraktova Square and the River Station.

Good to know:

  • Open daily: weekdays 07:00–22:00, weekends 08:00–22:00
  • A single ride costs 8 UAH; card payment availableThe trip takes around three minutes. The cabins are small, so it’s worth getting in a bit earlier, ideally by a window for the best views of the Dnipro and Podil.
