Reitarska Street

Reitarska Street is one of the most popular streets in central Kyiv. It dates back to the 17th century, when the area was home to cavalry units known as reiters — the origin of the street’s name. The wooden barracks of that time have long been replaced by elegant early 20th-century buildings. Among the highlights are the bright pink house once owned by comedian Yurii Tymoshenko at No. 20/25, and a 1914 medical centre at No. 22, built in Venetian Gothic style and said to have a twin building in Madrid — along with many other interesting historic facades.

Today, Reitarska has its own distinctive rhythm — a little creative, a little bohemian. Its atmosphere is shaped by small details: local street style, galleries, fashionable cafés and hidden courtyards that invite you to wander in. Together, they create the relaxed, free-spirited feel the street is known for.

Reitarska Street is just a few minutes’ walk from the Golden Gate and St Sophia’s Cathedral, making it easy to include in a walk around Kyiv’s historic centre.
