Poshtova Square
About Poshtova Square
Poshtova Square is one of Kyiv’s oldest squares, set right on the Dnipro embankment at the foot of Volodymyrska Hill. It’s a lively place: people skateboard and cycle here, read by the river or simply relax by the water. From here, it’s easy to continue your walk through Podil or take the funicular up to St Michael’s Golden-Domed Monastery.
The square also has strong historical roots. In 2015, archaeologists uncovered remains of the ancient city dating back to the time of Kyivan Rus beneath the square — today, they’re part of an on-site archaeological museum. Centuries ago, this was a key trading hub, where boats set off along the Dnipro. Later, the city post office operated here, giving the square its name.
In the warmer months, food courts and bars open around the square. Near the river, you’ll also spot the sculpture Children Launching Boats, dedicated to the legendary founders of Kyiv. On holidays, the figures are often dressed in playful costumes, adding a light-hearted touch to the area.
