Independence Square

Ukraine’s central square and a symbol of resilience
Streets & Squares

About Independence Square

Independence Square — or Maidan, as locals call it — is Kyiv’s main square and one of the country’s defining symbols. It became known worldwide during the 2013–2014 Revolution of Dignity, when nearly a million people gathered here to support Ukraine’s European future.

Today the square is also a place of remembrance. Since 2022, families of fallen soldiers have placed thousands of small flags here — a moving memorial that, sadly, grows every day.

At the same time, Maidan remains the city’s beating heart: a favorite spot for meeting friends, taking a walk or simply enjoying the atmosphere.

What makes Independence Square interesting

  • At the centre stands the 62-metre Independence Monument, one of Maidan’s most recognizable landmarks. It symbolizes the independence Ukraine fought for over centuries — and continues to defend today.
  • Museums around the square offer a closer look at Kyiv’s history and culture: the Museum of Kyiv History, the National Art Museum of Ukraine, the Ukrainian House and the Museum of the Revolution of Dignity. Kids love the Jellyfish Museum.
  • For shopping, visit the underground GLOBUS mall; its rooftop offers great views of Maidan and Khreshchatyk.
  • And when it’s time for a break, the area has plenty of places to eat. Try Ukrainian dishes at Ostannia Barykada, French classics and cheese at Très FRANÇAIS, or ramen at Naushi.
