Khreshchatyk

The main street of Ukraine’s capital
Streets & Squares

About Khreshchatyk

Khreshchatyk is Kyiv’s central street and one of the city’s key symbols. It stretches for just 1.2 km but reaches up to 100 metres in width, making it one of the shortest yet widest main streets in the world. For Kyiv, Khreshchatyk is what the Champs-Élysées are to Paris or La Rambla to Barcelona. It’s always lively — people stroll, take photos, relax and listen to street musicians.

What makes Khreshchatyk special

  • The street stands out for its grand Empire-style architecture, with tall buildings, balconies and arches. Look out for the House with a Star, the Main Post Office and the Kyiv City Hall with its colonnade.
  • Nearby you’ll find the Museum of Kyiv History and the contemporary art space PinchukArtCentre. Both regularly update their exhibitions and are worth a visit.
  • Khreshchatyk is also great for shopping in the very heart of the city. Start with the historic Bessarabskyi Market. For fashion, visit the TSUM department store or the Passage with its luxury boutiques. You’ll also find “Vsi Svoi,” a large two-storey store of Ukrainian brands. For souvenirs and gifts, stop by Folkmart.
  • The street has plenty of places to eat. Try the iconic Kyivska Perepichka, Ukraine’s first street food. For excellent pizza, head to Mimosa. You’ll also find great bars here such as BarmenDictat, LoggerHead and Sansara.
