The Ghost of Kyiv
About Ghost of Kyiv
The Ghost of Kyiv mural, painted on a building in Podil near Kontraktova Square, depicts a fighter pilot who defended Ukraine’s skies at the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion in 2022. According to early reports and stories, the pilot shot down more than a dozen enemy aircraft during the first weeks of the war and was killed in an intense air battle.
At the time, the Ghost of Kyiv became an urban legend and a symbol of courage and resilience — not only in Ukraine, but abroad as well. The story gained international attention and even inspired a Japanese manga.
In reality, the Ghost of Kyiv is not a single person but a collective image representing the pilots of Ukraine’s 40th Tactical Aviation Brigade, who protect the capital from Russian attacks. In 2022, on Ukrainian Aviation Day, the mural appeared on one of Podil’s buildings as a tribute to these pilots, reminding passers-by of their bravery and sacrifice.
