Verkhnii Val
About Verkhnii Val
Verkhnii Val is a busy street in the heart of Podil, where Kyiv’s history blends naturally with the city’s modern pace. Its name comes from the defensive ramparts of the 17th century, but today the street is all about contrasts: historic facades sit side by side with trendy restaurants, cafés and local brands.
Together with neighbouring Nyzhnii Val, the street forms a kind of urban corridor lined with late 19th- and early 20th-century buildings. Take a closer look at Mezentsev’s Apartment House, with its Baroque and Renaissance details, as well as the cozy historic townhouses nearby.
Verkhnii Val is home to some of Podil’s favourite places to eat. Try khinkali at Mama Manana, pizza at Tisto, Syr i Titka Bella, or fragrant tea at Chaguan. To really feel the area’s local character, stop by Zhytniy Market — one of Kyiv’s oldest markets, known for fresh produce and everyday city life.
Verkhnii Val is just a 10-minute walk from Kontraktova Square, making it easy to include in any walk around Podil.
