Train from Budapest to Kyiv
Direct Transcarpathia train
One of the main direct rail connections between Budapest and Kyiv is international train No. 10, Transcarpathia.
It leaves Budapest-Keleti in the evening and arrives at Kyiv-Pasazhyrskyi, Kyiv’s main railway station, the following day. The journey takes around 20–21 hours.
There’s no need to change trains: once you board in Budapest, you can stay on the same train all the way to Kyiv.
International timetables can change, so confirm the departure and arrival times for your travel date before setting off.
Other train options
The international Ruthenia service between Vienna and Kyiv also passes through Budapest-Kelenföld. Timetables and through-carriage availability can change, so look up the connection for your travel date.
If direct tickets are sold out, another option is to travel via Chop or Mukachevo and change there for a Ukrzaliznytsia train to Kyiv.
Where to buy train tickets
For current timetables and ticket availability, use MÁV and Ukrzaliznytsia. The booking process for international journeys can vary depending on the train and date.
Double-check the station listed on your ticket. Budapest has several major railway stations, and international services may leave from Keleti, Kelenföld or Nyugati.
If you’re flying into Budapest before taking the train, leave plenty of time for passport control, baggage collection and getting from the airport to the correct station.
Bus from Budapest to Kyiv
Direct buses to Kyiv leave from both Budapest Airport and several locations around the city.
A bus from the airport can be particularly practical if you’re flying into Budapest and heading straight to Ukraine, as you won’t need to travel into the city to catch a train.
FlixBus is one of the operators running direct services from Budapest Airport to Kyiv. Buses leave from the bus terminal near Terminals 2A and 2B. Your ticket will show the exact boarding point.
Before booking, check:
- where exactly the bus leaves from in Budapest;
- where it arrives in Kyiv;
- whether the journey involves any transfers;
- the luggage allowance and rules.
Journey times depend on the service, traffic and how long the border crossing takes. Give yourself some flexibility around your expected arrival time, especially if you have an important appointment or onward journey in Kyiv.
Driving from Budapest to Kyiv
If you’re driving, decide which Hungarian-Ukrainian border crossing you plan to use before setting off.
The Hungarian police’s official Határinfó service lists border crossings, opening hours, permitted types of traffic and estimated waiting times. Not every crossing is open 24 hours, so look up the latest information shortly before you leave.
You’ll also need an electronic vignette (e-vignette) to use Hungary’s toll motorways.
Before driving into Ukraine, make sure:
- your car insurance is valid in Ukraine;
- you have the required vehicle documents;
- your chosen border crossing accepts your type of vehicle.
For a rental car, ask the rental company in advance whether you’re allowed to take the vehicle into Ukraine and whether you need any additional paperwork or insurance.
What happens at the border?
Travelling from Hungary to Ukraine means leaving the Schengen Area and crossing the EU’s external border.
Keep your passport and any other documents you need to enter Ukraine somewhere easily accessible. If you’re travelling by bus, don’t put them in luggage stored in the hold.
The procedure varies depending on whether you’re travelling by train, bus or car. Simply follow the instructions from transport staff and border officials.
Crossing times vary with traffic, queues, the crossing you use and any additional checks. If you’re travelling by bus or car, allow extra time rather than relying on the scheduled arrival time alone.
Határinfó shows estimated waiting times on the Hungarian side, so crossing the border in full may take longer.
Documents and connections in Budapest
Entry requirements depend on your nationality and travel documents, and the rules for Hungary and Ukraine are separate.
Entering Hungary
Hungary is part of the Schengen Area. Depending on your nationality, you may need a Schengen visa or be eligible for visa-free entry.
For short stays in the Schengen Area, the general rule is up to 90 days in any 180 days. If you’re travelling on a visa or residence permit, make sure you meet the conditions that apply to your document.
Entering Ukraine
Being allowed to enter the Schengen Area does not automatically mean you can enter Ukraine.
Before travelling, look up Ukraine’s entry requirements for your nationality, including passport validity rules and whether you need a visa or any additional documents.
Arriving at Budapest Airport from outside Schengen
If you arrive from outside the Schengen Area and plan to continue to Ukraine by train, bus or car, you’ll need to leave the airport’s international transit area and enter Hungary.
An airport transit visa, if your nationality requires one, only allows you to remain within the international transit area. It does not allow you to enter Hungary and continue your journey overland.
Make sure you’re eligible to enter the Schengen Area before booking your flight to Budapest.
And avoid a tight connection between your flight and a train or bus to Ukraine. You’ll need enough time for passport control, baggage collection and getting to your departure point.
When you arrive in Kyiv
