Golden Gate

Golden Gate is one of Kyiv’s most important landmarks and a symbol of the medieval city. During the times of Kyivan Rus, it served as the main entrance to the capital and represented its power and international standing. The Golden Gate took on its current appearance in 1982, when it was reconstructed for Kyiv’s 1,500th anniversary and opened as a museum.

Inside, visitors can see preserved fragments of the original 11th-century walls, while the wooden structure above recreates what the gate may have looked like in medieval times. The museum exhibition tells the story of Kyiv’s history and the role the Golden Gate played in the life of the city.

From the upper levels, there are views over central Kyiv. Just nearby, you’ll find a small, cozy square with a fountain and benches, as well as the statue of Panteleimon the Cat, known for granting wishes. The area around the Golden Gate — including Yaroslaviv Val and Reitarska streets — is also full of cafés and restaurants, making it a great place to linger.
