Do stores in Kyiv accept bank cards and mobile payments?

Yes. Most shops and venues in Kyiv accept cashless payments — by card, phone, or smartwatch. Even markets and small local shops usually have card terminals.

That said, it’s a good idea to carry at least 1,000 UAH in cash for tips, minibuses (marshrutkas), or in case payment terminals are temporarily unavailable during power outages.

Can I pay with US dollars or euros in shops?

No. Only the Ukrainian hryvnia (₴, UAH) is accepted — it’s the country’s official currency.

Do shops stay open during air raid alerts?

All shopping malls close until the alert is lifted. Smaller shops often remain open, but this depends on the owner and staff.

What are typical store opening hours in Kyiv?

From midnight to 5:00 a.m., everything is closed due to curfew.

  • Shopping malls: usually open daily from 10:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m.
  • Supermarkets: typically from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m.
  • Clothing, accessory, cosmetics, and souvenir shops: generally open from 9:00–10:00 a.m. to 7:00–9:00 p.m.; some may have days off.

Most stores are also open on Sundays.
However, everything is closed from midnight to 5:00 a.m. due to the city’s curfew.

Bargaining is common at food markets, flea markets, and with souvenir vendors on Andriivskyi Descent. In shops and shopping malls, prices are fixed and bargaining is not customary.
