Entry Rules for Ukraine

Passport and travel documents required for visiting Kyiv in Ukraine

Ukraine remains open to foreign visitors despite the war. Still, you should prepare in advance and follow current entry and safety rules. Here’s what to know about visas, documents, and border crossing.

Who needs visa to travel to Ukraine

Ukraine has a visa-free regime with more than 100 countries. Citizens of these countries can stay visa-free for up to 90 days within any 180-day period. These include:

  • Most European countries;
  • The United States and Canada;
  • The United Kingdom;
  • Australia and New Zealand;
  • Japan and South Korea;
  • Israel;
  • Most countries in Latin America;
  • Part of Asia.

You can check the full visa-free country list on the official website of Ukraine’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

If your country is not on the visa-free list (for example China, India, Pakistan, Vietnam, Thailand, the Philippines, Egypt, and most African countries), you need to apply for a visa in advance at a Ukrainian embassy or consulate. The allowed length of stay depends on the visa type.

Citizens of more than 50 countries can apply for an electronic e-Visa for short stays in Ukraine of up to 30 days. The fee is $20 for single entry or $30 for double entry.

To apply, you need to:

  1. Register on the website of Ukraine’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs;
  2. Complete the online application form;
  3. Upload the required documents:
    • A 35×45 mm photo;
    • A passport valid for at least 3 months after your trip ends;
    • Medical insurance with coverage of at least €30,000;
    • Proof of sufficient funds;
    • Proof of your travel purpose.

Documents required at the border

Whether you need a visa or not, you’ll need to show a passport that is valid for your entire stay and has at least one blank page.

You should also have:

  • Medical insurance;
  • Proof of sufficient funds (about $45 per day per person);
  • Proof of travel purpose, such as an invitation from a Ukrainian citizen, medical documents, or an event ticket.

The border process is usually straightforward: officers check documents, may inspect luggage, and ask about the purpose of your trip and any items that must be declared.

Please note that border checkpoints suspend operations during an air raid alert.
