Weather and climate in Kyiv

Kyiv has a moderately continental climate with four distinct seasons: winter, spring, summer, and fall. Throughout the year, the weather is generally predictable and comfortable. Extreme cold or heat is rare, as are prolonged snowfalls or heavy rains.

Winter (December – February)
Winter in Kyiv is typically cloudy and cold, with average temperatures ranging from -4°C (25°F) to 0°C (32°F). Occasionally, temperatures may drop to -15°C (5°F) or lower, but such cold snaps usually last only a few days and occur once every few years.
Snowfall is common, although in recent years it has become lighter and less frequent.
- What to pack: A down jacket or warm coat, winter boots, a hat, scarf, gloves, warm sweaters or hoodies, and thermals.
- Why visit Kyiv in winter? From early December through at least mid-February, the city embraces a festive holiday atmosphere. Seasonal attractions open, such as the Winter Country at VDNG, and a Christmas tree is set up at Sofiyska Square. Spring (March – May)

Summer (June – August)
June brings gentle sunshine and warmth, with average temperatures around +25°C (77°F). July and August are much hotter, with daily highs around +30°C (86°F). On rare occasions, the temperature can climb up to +40°C (104°F), so it’s good to be prepared.
Rain is fairly common in summer, ranging from short, warm showers to heavy thunderstorms. It’s best to check the hourly forecast for the day’s weather updates.
- What to pack: T-shirts, tank tops, shirts, shorts, light shoes, a cap or hat. A swimsuit will come in handy too — Kyiv has public beaches and outdoor pools. Don’t forget sunscreen and sunglasses.

Fall (September – November)

- What to pack: In September, a T-shirt or light shirt is fine during the day, but you’ll want a light sweater for the evenings. In October and November, pack sweaters, fleece sets, a warm vest or jacket. Sneakers will be fine early in the season; later on, opt for mid-season boots.
