Yaroslaviv Val
About Yaroslaviv Val
Yaroslaviv Val is one of Kyiv’s oldest streets, located near the Golden Gate. It is named after Prince Yaroslav the Wise, the Kyivan ruler who strengthened the state and played a key role in the development of education and culture. During the era of Kyivan Rus, this area marked the line of the city’s defensive fortifications. Over time, it grew into an important part of Kyiv’s urban life.
What makes Yaroslaviv Val special
- Almost every building here has its own story and distinctive architecture, and some can even be visited on guided tours. Along the street you’ll find the former home of the “holy doctor,” the striking former Karaite Kenesa, which resembles a temple, and the mysterious Baron’s Castle, guarded by winged demon sculptures.
- In the 19th and early 20th centuries, Yaroslaviv Val was a centre of Kyiv’s intellectual life. Prominent scientists, artists and inventors lived here, including Ihor Sikorskyi, the creator of the world’s first helicopter.
- Today, Yaroslaviv Val is a lively part of the city, home to cafés, theatres and embassies from around the world. Be sure to stop by Yaroslava, Kyiv’s oldest bakery and a long-time favourite among both locals and visitors.
