About Samson Fountain

The Samson Fountain is a Baroque landmark of Podil with a history of more than 270 years. It’s more than just a decorative feature — the fountain is seen as a symbol of Kyiv’s resilience. According to local legend, as long as water continues to flow here, the city itself will stand.

At the centre of the fountain is a sculpture of Samson tearing open the jaws of a lion, from which the water flows. This dramatic scene has become one of Podil’s most recognisable images, often photographed and surrounded by stories and beliefs passed down through generations.

The fountain stands on Kontraktova Square, making it a natural starting point for a walk around Podil.
