Monument to the Founders of Kyiv
About the Monument to the Founders of Kyiv
The city’s hallmark — the Monument to the Founders of Kyiv — stands on a boat cutting through the waves. It features the figures of the brothers Kyi, Shchek, and Khoryv and their sister Lybid. These four heroes are mentioned by the chronicler Nestor in the «Tale of Bygone Years» — as the founders of the capital city of Kyiv.
The monument attracts countless tourists and locals alike. From the observation deck, visitors enjoy breathtaking views of the Dnipro River and the city’s left bank. Newlyweds often come to take photos and literally shower the sculpture with flowers. Tradition says you should stand with your back to the monument and toss your bouquet into the heroes’ boat — hitting the sculpture brings happiness and prosperity to the young couple.
The monument is made of forged copper, with a granite pedestal and a pool built in front. It was unveiled on May 22, 1982, to celebrate Kyiv’s 1500th anniversary — located in the park near the Paton Bridge. The sculptor Vasyl Borodai, famous for creating the «Motherland Monument», is the author of this masterpiece.
