Askold’s Grave
About Askold’s Grave
Askold’s Grave is one of Kyiv’s oldest and most mysterious places. According to legend, this is where Prince Askold was killed in 882, giving the area its name. Today, it’s a peaceful park overlooking the Dnipro river and Trukhaniv Island — a calm spot where you can step away from city noise and dive into history.
Until the 1930s, the site served as an elite cemetery, later destroyed by Soviet authorities. Still, fragments of the old necropolis remain, reminding visitors of Kyiv’s layered past.
The park’s architectural gem is St Nicholas Church, built in the early 19th century and visited by Pope John Paul II in 2001. You’ll also find memorials honoring Ukrainian defenders from different periods — from the Heroes of Kruty to soldiers of today’s Russian-Ukrainian war.
